Hold On To Your Dreams With SKD

Not So long ago many of us would have been musically influenced mainly by big American RnB stars, the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Beyonce, Prince and So on. Some of you like me might even go back a little bit further.. remember Shalamar, The Whispers or Earth, Wind and Fire. I grew up listening to their hits.
While this might still be the case and American RnB still dominants the charts, times are changing and you cannot ignore the rising music phenomenon from Africa which has been labelled Afrobeat or Afropop by some of us. Over the past few years African Artists mainly from Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa have been making serious inroads onto the the charts and club dance floors in the big cities from Lagos, to Accra  London and New York. and you now have big international stars from the U.S rushing down to Nigeria to collaborate with and also sign up top Nigerian stars the most recent being Snoop Dogg,  Kanye West and Akon.

As a result Nigeria in particular has now become a hot bed of creativity and innovation with its music industry literally going into overdrive and churning out  hits from a new crop of superstars such as Dbanj, Psquare,Tuface and most recently Wiz Kid the latest superstar on the block. Of course that also means there are many new and not so new artists trying to make their mark and break through into the big time most of these however just tend to imitate the the big stars and quality and class is still not easy to find  which is why its always good when you stumble on an artists with something special which you know is different and set to go places.

And thats exactly how I felt when I listened to this new track 'Hold on to your dreams' from SKD which stands for Sound Knock Down, the brainchild of an artist determined to push the bounderies and bring something new to the table, driven by a strong belief in fate or what some might call his destiny SKD believes that he was born to create something different and make a big impact on the music industry and you can tell from listening to this track which is already getting thousands of Youtube views  that he is certainly heading in the right direction.

SKD is not new to the Nigerian scene and has worked his way up from humble beginnings, born in Nigeria, he began entertaining and rapping when he was in primary school. He was heavily influenced by Kurtis Blow, 2Pac, Run dmc, public enemy, NWA, Nas and DMX. and soon began developing his own unique style of rapping, he entered and won local and national competitions, making his first demo with his brother providing keyboard and sound engineering support.  They say if you work hard and stay focused you will get results and SKD has definitely worked hard and done his time participating in various local and international talent shows, including O2 in the park 2004, the New York Music festival , LA music Festival , and performing in different night clubs and venues in , UK USA and Nigeria.

He has fast gained a reputation as singer, and rapper and accomplished guitarist. and says  in his own words "I would love to make money from what I do, there's nothing wrong with that but I love the music even more and right now I'm holding on to my dreams"

Have a listen/download the track  I'm sure you will be impressed  and don't  forget  share with your friends. comments are also welcome.

Peace and Blessings.

Ice Prince ft. Gyptian – Magician (Remix)

New Video from Ice Prince in collaboration with Jamaican Crooner  Gyptian. the track is titled 'Magician' and I must say I very much like the beat on this one its quite laid back and the chorus is catchy delivered in a dance hall fashion which is fast becoming the trend on the Naija music scene.

Wande Coal-Private Trips

Another Chartbuster from Wande Coal who is currently signed to the Mo-hits Records label with other big Naija Artists Dr Sid, D'Prince, Dbanj and KSwitch  this is  the video of his first single 'Private Trips' off his 2nd album and what can I say about that beauty in the video if anything she makes its definitely worth watching.

The track itself has been subject to some mixed reviews however since its upload on youtube last week its been getting many thousands of views and I  think its a great tune but probably not quite at the same level as his mega hits 'Bumper To Bumper'  and 'Who Born The Maga'  from his first album and maybe some are still judging him by those standards.
Anyway this is just  his first single off the album so there's more to come and anyone who has followed Wande Coal will know that he got immense talents so I'm sure we will not be disappointed'.
I'll let you be the judge on this one have a listen and please leave your comments

Dbanj, Kanye West & Beyonce - Oliver Twist Remixed

We knew it would happen and it finally has, Nigerian superstar Dbanj has hit the UK Official top 10 charts with the remix of his track 'Oliver Twist' which features an appearance from Kanye West.
Dbanj is currrently in the UK promoting his new single, the fact that it is now charting at No 9 on the UK  and iTunes charts must be welcome news and proof that his collaboration with Kanye has worked very well.

Dbanj who signed to the Kanye West Music Label G.O.O.D Music in June 2011 has experienced a metoric rise to fame since hitting the Afropop music scene 7 years ago with his hit single Tongolo which was then followed on by a string of hits such as 'Suddenly' 'Why Me', 'Gbono fele fele' and 'Fall In Love

Known for his energetic and charismatic live performances this is not the first time Dbanj has hit the limelight by collaborating with a big U.S RnB Star, In 2011 he also collaborated with Rap Superstar Snoop Dogg to remix his track 'Mr Endowed '

After a rather slow start for the Oliver Twist remix which had to contend with competition from afropop crooners and potential rivals Psquare signed to RnB superstar Akon's 'Konvict Muzik' Label their track  'Chop My Money'  which featured Akon and had been released a few months earlier had been getting a couple of million more views on Youtube.

Dbanj and Kanye are now fast closing the gap with over a million youtube views of 'Oliver Twist' and going straight into the mainstream charts It now seems there are bound to be more exciting new developments and releases in the pipeline from both Artists and their labels  as they continue to compete for domination of the Afrobeat/Afropop music scene which has been rapidly gaining recognition in the mainstream pop charts.

Dbanj Set feature In Kanye West Movie
Just when you would think things could not get any better for the Dbanj there is also the news out that he is set to feature in Kanye West's movie "Cruel Summer" which is set to be released later on this year and we can truly say it looks like the man is set to go places and hopefully things will continue to get better.

In Oliver Twists he sings the line "I like Beyonce" and who knows he get to might get to meet her soon.. of course he would need to watch out for Jayz.

PSquare ft Akon & May D 'Chop My Money'

Unless you ve been hiding under a rock in the Sahara desert for the past few months you should know that
P-Square are now signed to the Akon label 'Konvict Music' along with fellow Naija stars Wiz Kid and 2face.
The results of Akon and P-square collaboration is the track 'Chop My Money' which features appearances from Akon and Nigerian Rapper May D.
Released late last month the video has been an instant hit on Youtube with over a million hits so far and firmly placing the dynamic twins at the top of the charts where they rightly belong. The video which was shot in multiple locations tells the story of one of the twins spending and losing his money on a beautiful women who does n't return his love .. well what's new, some people would say life is a game you win some and you lose some,  On another level you could see this as a celebration of the power women to manipulate men or maybe its just a case of P-Square having too much money to care.

Whatever the case the track is definitely a super-hit and Akon seems to have got his strategy spot on, and I can only see this track bringing him more success and exposure to the millions African fans worldwide of course P-Square must be laughing all the way to bank as they gain even more  international exposure and recognition featuring alongside Akon no wonder the're singing  'I don't care if you chop my money'
The role this track plays in popularizing the Nigerian Slangs and Genre of Afropop internationally cannot be overstated and it looks like a win win situation for the Nigerian music scene at the moment.
Meanwhile Kanye West's Signing of their Arch Rival D'Banj to his 'Good Music' record label does nt seem to be going as well as expected despite Kanye also making cameo appearances at D'banj shows, so far the P.Square hit seems to be way ahead in the charts some observers have stated that one of the reasons for Akon's runaway success is due to the fact that he has more of a hands on approach and has been more heavily involved in the collaborations you could also argue that because of Akon's West African roots being from Sengal himself he probably has more indepth knowledge and feel for the African  market.
The recent split between Dbanj and his long time producers Don Jazzy also seem to indicate that not all is well at the moment anyway whatever the case I wouldnt  write off D'Banj yet as I suspect there's more to come from that camp Kanye West is a star on top of his game who not only knows the music industry inside out, he is also a master of showmanship and self promotion and  we'll have to wait and see what his next move with D'banj will be, I suspect the rivalries between the two camps  are set to run and run... Just watch this space
Peace

Wiz Kid Remixes Dont Dull with Akon

We recently ran a story on that fast rising young Nigerian Star Wiz Kid who has been literally ripping up the club floors with quite a few hits especially the single 'Don't Dull' well his hard work seems to have paid off, recently signed by international RnB Star Akon to his Konvict Muzik Label it seems the duo have been busy in the studio working on some forthoming hits apparently a remix of the hit single is soon to be released featuring vocals from Akon
It seems there's no stopping for the Nigerian Artistes as they continue to gain recognition from their international counterparts with Psquare also joining Akon's label and releasing the new hit single 'Chop My Money' and Dbanj  along with his Mohits Crew now working and performing with superstar Kanye West on his G.O.O.D Music Label I think we can safely say Nigerian pop music is set to take it's rightful place on the world stage -  well lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best,

This track simply titled Ife which means love in Yoruba language was released a couple of years ago by Azeezat, one of the first contemporary female songstresses to come out of what we now know as the the Naija Pop industry. She first shot to limelight back in 1999 when her stunning performance at a talent hunt competition earned her recognition from top industry movers such as Bisi Olatilo, Femi Kuti and Dele Momodu since then she gone from strength to strength slogging away performing and working hard recording in the studio.

Her first big Single called ‘Lonely World' won her music awards and Nominations in 2000 as the best Nigerian female artist alongside industry Legend Onyeka Onwenu. Azeezat then went on to release her highly sucessful album titled 'Simply Magnificent' which won her over 13 Awards Nationwide featuring hit singles Hold On, Olorun Mi and Keregbe.

Her second album released in 2007 titled 'Born To Sing' featured 8 tracks and earned her further recognition with hit tracks Lorawaghbo, Five Minutes and Woman and guess what she’s bounced back with more goods on her 2010 album titled 'Loversclub' which includes this single Ife a track which brings out the best in Azeezat as her silky vocals float over the music professing love and peace for forever. I think I'd recommend this as a good track for easy listening on a Sunday morning
Bless.

GFlowBaba Hussle N Bubble

Big track from G.FlowBaba in case you're wondering who he is then you might recognise him by his former stage name Teran G which he has now changed due to legal and other management reasons don't ask me what that's all about! but he back under new management and with a big track simply titled Hussle N Bubble.and it's as catchy as they come with a video which I must say is very slick and well produced, it features flashbacks of his great grandfather the late Herbert Ogunde a musical  theatrical Icon, and  legendary pioneer of professional theatre as well as one of the first big movie makers in Nigeria.
For more information on Gflow Baba check him out on his brand new website or  hook up with him on FaceBook by clicking on the links below. and don't forget you can download the track here.

QOFI Menza Them Not Know

Stepping out from Accra, Ghana Qofi Menza is one of those guys gaining a lot of traction and attention nowadays, because he has his own unique style with a very good beat and drops some inspirational and positive messages on his tracks in his own words he says "All those that walk positive and believe that no matter what God ( Nana, Onyame, Allah, Jah Buddha, Yaweh, Karmah. The Supreme Being, The Most High) Still walks with his people....KEEP THE FAITH in God Almighty and ourselves.

Currently signed to the Blaqq Drum label QOFI has just dropped his new album "GHANA EP"  and trust me if the rest of the tracks are as good as this one then I will be definitely looking forward to it.

Tha Suspect Ft Sasha - I No Send You

If you're a fan of Sasha  then you should check out these choice Joints, the above video  feats her on a wacky track from Tha Suspect called 'I No Send You' while the next one is called 'Don't Stop'  In my opinion Sasha must be one of the best female African rappers around, I would even go as far as saying she is the best but I'll let you make your own judgements on that,  what is indisputable though is that the acclaimed First Lady of Hip Hop continues to go from strength to strength and these two tracks go a long way to prove that fact and showcase her versatile arsenal of rap skills..
